The world of bubbles can produce some stunning images as seen here. The question always asked is ‘Why are bubbles round?’. A bubble, in this case, is made up of water and soap solution. This solution has surface tension which acts on the surface and tries to pull it into the smallest possible grouping of molecules (similarly to a balloon’s elasticity trying to pull it inwards). The tightest possible grouping of molecules is a sphere, which gives rise to the spherical shape of bubbles. However, this reasoning would lead to a bubble continually contracting until it was a spherical blob, which does not happen. This is because of the air trapped within the bubble; if the bubble contracts a small amount the pressure inside the bubble rises and pushes back against the effect of surface tension. In the end it is a balancing act between the pressure of air outside the bubble, the pressure inside the bubble and the surface tension of the bubble.
